This article should be read by anyone who wonders what the world would’ve been like if Al Gore won the year 2000 election. Although, the fact that Bush got a second term and judging by Donald Trump’s poll numbers, devoted conservatives probably wouldn’t have voted any differently.

Thank you for that. As you can tell, one of my overall concerns are the number of moderates and progressives who think that all of our political problems can be solved if the public would just "come to its senses and vote for the right person." As you know, I feel that we need to think about architectural changes to the system, rather than simply imploring the public to vote for the right person. And this impulse, to think about architectural changes, is inline with what the Founding Fathers felt. They were clear that we needed a system of checks and balances. They were certain that a pure democracy would not survive. And so we should be thinking about additional checks and balances.

Absolutely, but to be clear, it's not the hyperbole that's dangerous, it is the situations where someone says "Vote for me or the nation will be destroyed" and there is some truth to the assertion. At which point a reasonable person should ask, should any one election be allowed to matter this much?
